As AI—specifically generative AI—continues to capture the attention and imagination of us all, it becomes more evident than ever that we need to be prepared to live in an AI-influence world. Governments, as it seems, are well aware of this fact.

This week, the United States National Security Agency (NSA) announced it would be creating an artificial intelligence security center to help integrate AI into the US defense and intelligence services. This move is designed to get ahead of AI’s emergence, especially in the context of national security. As General Paul Nakasone, director of the NSA and US Cyber Command says, this center will “shape the future” of AI tech in security, defense, and intelligence sectors.

While General Paul Nakasone acknowledges the US currently has the advantage when it comes to AI technologies, he admits the goal is now to keep that advantage by continuing to lead in the development of artificial intelligence. Also key is the prevention of US AI innovations from falling into the hands of foreign actors.

Perhaps as evidence to this point, the General claims the agencies already use AI technologies in their work, however humans still make all final decisions.
