AI is advancing more rapidly than anyone thought possible. It has gone beyond niche tech circles, and is now accessible by anyone with a smartphone or computer. As such, everyone from businesses to governments is working on ways to implement AI technology into their work and lives: Now, it’s a part of an international cybersecurity effort.

As reported by ZDNet, Singapore and France have formally announced their intentions to create a research facility dedicated to developing AI technology specifically for cyberdefense:

The agreement between Singapore’s Ministry of Defence (Mindef) and France’s Ministry of the Armed Forces (MOAF) will see both countries collaborate in potential research, such as AI for geospatial analysis, natural language processing to extract information for analysis, and computer vision for monitoring image and video feeds to identify potential threats across various environmental conditions.

The project is a first in many ways: For one, it is Mindef’s first lab in Singapore established exclusively with another nation. Singapore and France will share research expertise, from both the French National Centre for Scientific Research and Temasek Laboratories @ National University of Singapore.

As newsworthy as the deal is, collaborations between the two nations isn’t that new. An agreement became official back in March of 2022 that would see collaboration between France and Singapore in many areas, such as smart transport, financial services, and medical tech.

The move is a good sign: Cybersecurity is a global concern. Thanks to the internet, hackers do not have the boundaries other types of crime are limited by. By linking different countries together, and strengthening cybersecurity across the world, everyone benefits (except the hackers).
