When you join a video call, whether on Zoom, Teams, or another platform, an important aspect is one that’s taken for granted: Your name. You likely don’t think about your video call name at all; you set it once and you forgot about it. But, you might want to take this moment to consider: What’s your name?

I bring this up, because you aren’t prompted to change on your name on, say, a new Zoom call, for example. The first time you are asked for your name, your Zoom app will remember for the device you’re using. If you simply entered your first and last name, for instance, then you’re pretty much set for any interaction.

However, with the world moving increasingly digital, many of us use video calling for more than business. You might use a nickname when video calling with friends and family, or a joke name, depending on the situation. You likely don’t want those alternatives names appearing the next time you use that Zoom app to video chat with your coworkers, however, if you don’t change it before your next professional Zoom call, that’s what they will see.

This is your reminder to consider what your last name change was before you hop on another call.
